Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipe
I’m all about easy-peasy breakfast recipes… mornings are hard!
When we’re not heating up crockpot oatmeal or eggs that I made ahead of time, I’ll whip up a big batch of pancakes or breakfast burritos and stash the extras in the freezer.
Munchkin adores a strawberry and banana smoothie, so I like to throw those in the rotation too. She even has her own smoothie cup!
The protein in this smoothie, thanks to the yogurt, is what I love best — especially when she’s being finicky about breakfast.
As a bonus, I can double this strawberry banana smoothie recipe to make ice pops as a snack.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
- Orange Juice – Trust me, it’s way better than using milk — and you get extra vitamin C to boot! Use freshly squeezed or bottled, whichever is easier.
- Plain Yogurt – Since I’m using orange juice, yogurt helps create that creamy smoothie texture.
Swap with Greek yogurt for a little extra protein, or use a flavored yogurt if you’d like. If you have vanilla yogurt, you can omit the vanilla extract. - Strawberries & Bananas – I’ve always got bananas browning on the counter, so I pair those with frozen berries so the smoothie is par-frozen.
It takes longer to eat and feels more satisfying that way.
You could swap the two and use frozen bananas with fresh strawberries if you prefer.
This strawberry banana smoothie recipe is also delicious with all fresh fruit, but the texture will be much thinner.
Offset that with some ice cubes — or frozen orange juice cubes! - Vanilla Extract – This is optional but adds a little extra sweetness without needing sugar. Maple syrup or honey would work too.
Strawberry and Banana Smoothie Variations
Use milk as your base. This will really enhance the flavors of banana and strawberry in a smoothie. Either dairy or non-dairy milk will do the job.
Add some greens. I’ll sometimes add a handful or so of kale and spinach for a vitamin boost. While it will change the color, it won’t affect the flavor at all.
Increase the nutrients. Toss some hemp seeds into the blender for extra protein, vitamins, and minerals, or ground flaxseed for omega-3 and fiber.
Swap in different fruits. Use this strawberry banana smoothie recipe as a base for other flavor creations!
Mangos, peaches, pineapple, and other berries would all be delicious — just keep the total amount of fruit the same.
How to Make Strawberry Banana Smoothie
- Slice the bananas first.
You can also break them into smaller pieces with your hands, but slicing is a MUST if they are frozen.
Frozen strawberries will do ok whole, but I’ll usually slice them if I’m freezing them myself. It just makes blending easier and prevents tiny chunks from getting stuck in your straw.
- Layer the ingredients correctly.
When making smoothies, add all the liquids to the blender first. Since we’re using yogurt, that goes next, followed by the fruit.
This allows the blender to quickly create a vortex that pulls the solids towards the blades. But if you start with the solids, the blades will just get stuck.
- Blend until smooth.
Watch the center of the blender — there should be a consistent swirl, like a whirlpool, once everything is well blended.
If you see it going lopsided, that means there are still some chunks of fruit mixed in. Stop the blender, pulse a few times, then run it again!
- Adjust the consistency if needed.
This banana strawberry smoothie should be a little thick, but not so thick that you need a spoon to eat it.
If you’re using Greek yogurt, you may need some extra orange juice to thin it out. But if both fruits are fresh (not frozen), start with less liquid.
Now, if you’re using frozen strawberries and frozen bananas, then you’ll need to blend a little differently.
Start with just one fruit and blend until smooth, then add the other. You’ll get a better idea if you need more juice or not this way.
Kitchen Tools You Will Need
- Blender – A high-power blender is a must in every kitchen. Use it for smoothies, shakes, sauces, and more!
- Measuring Cups and Spoons – You may be tempted to eyeball the amounts, but I recommend using the proper tools so your banana and strawberry smoothie comes out just right.
Serving Suggestions
Pour your banana strawberry smoothie into two glasses — or one big one!
You could also reduce the amount of OJ and serve it as a smoothie bowl. Top with your choice of fruit slices, chia seeds, nuts, and granola.
And for a full meal, sip on your strawberry and banana smoothie while you dig into some French toast or coffee cake!
Banana Strawberry Smoothie FAQ
Nope! Frozen fruit creates the same thick and frosty texture you crave without watering down the flavor.
Bananas are especially great for making smoothies nice and creamy, and they’re a great option for non-fruit flavors like chocolate or peanut butter.
Your fruit smoothie could be bland or too tart if the fruit isn’t ripe, including the orange juice.
Make sure to use fully ripe berries and bananas that have brown spots on the peels. If it’s still not sweet enough, add a little extra vanilla or some honey or maple syrup and blend again.
Simply leave out the yogurt and adjust the other ingredient amounts to get the right consistency. In that case, I’d use frozen bananas and fresh strawberries.
Enjoy!
