This will make your entire house smell incredibly delicious, just like banana bread! (And it definitely tastes like it too.)
This is such a rich and delicious dessert, it really doesn’t taste like it was made from just a few simple household ingredients!
It kind of reminds me of a mix between a cobbler and a bread pudding.
This easy banana bread dump cake is quickly becoming one of my favorite easy dessert recipes. And, it’s a great way to use up any bananas you have on hand.
Banana Dessert Dump Cake
I love surprising my family with decadent desserts. But, I don’t always want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen preparing them. This banana dessert is so simple to make but it packs a lot of wow into it.
Why is it called a dump cake?
Dump cake describes a simple dessert that is made by simply “dumping” or layering unprepared ingredients into a baking dish.
It’s an easy dessert that is somewhere between a cake and a cobbler.
You really just dump the ingredients into a 9×13 ban and then bake it. There is usually no mixing involved at all. You can have this ready in just a few minutes minus the baking time.
Should dump cake be refrigerated?
Generally, dump cake is served hot or warm with a glaze, sauce, or a scoop of French vanilla ice cream. Once it’s cooled, you should refrigerate it to enjoy the leftovers another day.
Banana dump cake variations
The original banana dessert recipe that I adapted from TikTok resulted in a super sweet banana dump cake. To cut the sweetness a little bit, I did not use all of the enclosed topping mix.
Instead, I substitute a vanilla glaze that I think adds just the perfect taste without so much sweetness. I also sprinkled nuts on top. If you have someone with food allergies, you can leave those out.
There are lots of different ways you can change up the taste of this recipe. Why not try a banana chocolate chip dump cake by adding chocolate chips.
Or, make a strawberry banana dump cake by using a strawberry cake mix. The possibilities are almost endless.
Can I add nuts to the cake?
Yes, if you want to add the nuts to the banana dump cake itself, you can add them when you add the evaporated milk.
If my cake mix still looks powdery after baking, how do I fix it?
Sometimes when you make this type of banana dessert, there is still powder left on top after you bake it. No worries, it’s simple to fix.
Just add a little bit of butter to the top of the cake where you see the mix and bake it for a while longer. Just check it regularly so it doesn’t burn.
What should I top banana dump cake with?
My vanilla glaze is absolutely delicious. But, if you want something easier for this banana dessert, you can add one of these instead:
- French vanilla ice cream
- Homemade whipped cream
- Frozen whipped topping
- Chocolate chips (or white chocolate chips)
- A drizzle of chocolate syrup
- Chopped pecans or walnuts

Added 3/4 of a container of sour cream to the milk and whisk it together.
Came out really good.
I have a Pillsbury Sugar Free cinnamon swirl coffee cake mix. It’s only 16.4 ounces. How much should I reduce the amount of evaporated milk by to get the consistency needed? We have cut added sugar out of our diet.
Hi Beth,
Let’s calculate:
As the recipe is written, 12 ounces (condensed milk) is 57.14 percent of 21 ounces (cake mix)
Your cake mix is only 16.4 ounces, so your condensed milk should be 57.14 percent of that.
57.14 % of 16.4 ounces = 9.37096 ounces
Hope this helps!
