What is a mug cake?
If you’ve never heard of a mug cake, let me explain. Basically, it is a single-serving cake that is cooked in a coffee mug in the microwave.
It’s intended to be eaten by one person. Although, there is no reason that you can’t share with someone if you really want to. Or, better yet, make them their own!
Golden or chocolate Oreo cake in mug is one of my favorite easy desserts. We also have chocolate chip cookie and Nutter Butter versions that are just as delicious!
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
- Oreo Cookies – Stick with the classic version! The extra cream filling in Double or Mega Stuf cookies will throw off the batter.
- Milk – Whatever you have in your fridge will work — whole, skim, even plant-based milk!
- Flour – Nothing fancy for this Oreo mug cake recipe! Just regular all-purpose flour.
- Sugar – Use all granulated white sugar, or swap 1 teaspoon for brown sugar to add a hint of caramel flavor.
- Baking Powder – NOT baking soda. Trust me, it makes a difference!
- Cocoa Powder – This is the kind for baking, not the powdered mix for making hot cocoa. Look for it in the baking aisle labeled as unsweetened or natural cocoa powder.
How to Make Oreo Mug Cake
- Grab your favorite mug.
Make sure that you use a microwave-safe mug. They aren’t all safe for microwaves, so it’s important that you check. Otherwise, it may shatter.
- Add cookies and crush.
I used a fork to crumble mine. It doesn’t need to be super fine crumbs, just smaller pieces — the milk will help to break them down more.
- Stir in milk, then the remaining ingredients.
Make sure the milk is mixed all the way to the bottom. It will be pretty liquidy, but that’s what you’re looking for!
Add sugar, flour, baking powder, and cocoa powder, then stir again with a fork. Crumble up your last Oreo and press the pieces into the batter.
You could add a whole one if you prefer. We tried it both ways, and having it in pieces instead of whole makes the Oreo mug cake easier to eat. Plus, you’ll get little bits of cookie in every bite!
- Microwave for 90 seconds.
If you cook only for 60 seconds — like some other recipes suggest — some of the mixture won’t be cooked on the bottom.
This will make your Oreo cookie mug cake taste more like a thick pudding instead of a fluffy cake.
Prep Ahead
- Grab a clean mug
- Measure out ingredients
What You’ll Need to Make Oreo Cake in a Mug
The reason mug cakes are so popular is because they require no special equipment and very little clean-up time. All you basically need is a mug and a microwave!
But, here is the official equipment list:
- Microwave proof mug
- Fork
- Microwave
Serving Suggestions
You can add any sort of topping that you might normally add to a cake. I usually add whipped cream and crumbled Oreos to mine.
You might want to try a few of these on your Oreo cake in a mug:
- Vanilla ice cream
- Cream cheese frosting
- Powdered sugar
- Chocolate syrup
- Fresh sliced strawberries
- Caramel sauce
Oreo Cookie Mug Cake Flavor Variations
If you’d rather use a different flavor of Oreos, you can certainly do that. A mint chocolate Oreo cookie mug cake would be delicious!!
Or, you might want to try the birthday cake flavor or even the red velvet cookies. There are so many different possibilities out there.
But, you could also use another type of cookie:
- Ginger Snaps
- Peanut butter
- Vanilla
- Shortbread
- Animal crackers
You’ll need to experiment with different cookie types to make sure the batter is thick enough to turn into a cake when you cook it.
Oreo Mug Cake Recipe FAQ
Besides making sure it’s microwaveable, almost any mug will work. It will need to hold the batter and have a little bit of headspace for it to rise.
It really doesn’t rise much, so a large coffee mug should work just fine. Aim for 10 to 12 ounces to be sure.
No, this one is better. The viral version you see all over TikTok uses only two ingredients: Oreos and milk.
I think my version tastes 100% better than that. You will need a few more ingredients to make this Oreo mug cake recipe, but the flavor and texture are worth it!
It’s likely that you overcooked it, but it’s possible that the ingredient ratios were off too.
Be sure to measure the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder correctly. If it makes it easier, measure these all into a small separate bowl. Then, all you have to do is dump and stir into the milk and cookie mixture.
If your microwave is more powerful than most (over 1100 watts), then try reducing the cooking time in 10-second increments until you find the sweet spot.
Oreo mug cake should be a mix of fluffy and gooey textures and a little bit shiny on top.
Enjoy!
