Onion Soup Mix Recipe Tips and Tricks
- Make a larger batch. Easily double or triple the onion soup mix recipe if you find yourself going through each jar quickly.
- Don’t forget the soy sauce! Sprinkling this over the seasonings may seem a bit unconventional, but it’s a small amount and doesn’t add much more moisture than the bouillon already has.
- Sugar substitute: I find that this helps balance the stronger flavors of the Lipton soup, but you can easily omit it or use your favorite artificial sweetener.
- Need a vegetarian version? Simply replace the beef bouillon with vegetable bouillon instead.
- Add celery seed. This spice isn’t as commonly used, but it really adds an authentic flavor.
Include ⅛ teaspoon in this recipe and use the extra in rubs and salad dressings!
How To Use Lipton Soup Mix
For a simple batch of soup, stir ¼ cup of the mixture into 4 cups of water in a saucepan.
Simmer on the stove for 10 to 15 minutes until warmed through and thickened.
Otherwise, the most popular use is for party onion dip! Mix ¼ of the seasoning into 16-ounces of sour cream.
Refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours before serving – this allows the larger flakes to soften and gives time for the flavors to combine.
It’s also a great way to add flavor to beef dishes like stew and Mississippi Pot Roast. Add some to your burgers and meatloaf or mashed potatoes and rice!

- 1/2 cup dried onion flakes
- 1/3 cup beef bouillon granules
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon onion powder

What do you mean by beef granules? 1/3 cup seems to be a tremendous amount. Please give a product example.

Could you use soy sauce powder instead of liquid? I’d have to wing it on how much.

Soy sauce powder is concentrated soy sauce, which I imagine is very potent. I’m unsure how much you would use for this recipe. I did find a source online that says to reconstitute soy sauce powder, you mix one part powder with 1 1/3 parts water. I hope this helps!

This was a great healthy alternative to the lipton soup. It turned out even better than expected!
The sodium content is very high. Is it mainly from the bullion or salt? I could use a salt substitute but is there a good substitute for the bullion. I have low sodium soy sauce.

You can buy no sodium beef bouillon and along with your salt substitute and low sodium soy sauce it should greatly reduce the sodium level.

You can also reduce sodium and a lot of additives you can’t pronounce by substituting low sodium powdered bone broth, mushroom powder or nutritional yeast for boullion granules. Adding ground celery seed as you mentioned in the forward but not included in the recipe card would add a savory note that would help disguise the lower sodium in the flavor profile. Adding a pinch of citric acid (in the canning aisle) or powdered lemon product like TruLemon (found in the juice and powdered beverage aisle at the grocery store) also fools the palate to replace salty flavors. Dried thyme would compliment this recipe as well.
I would just mix up a batch and further process it in my dehydrator and store it in my pantry – my fridge is always jammed full.
Does this contain gluten? Gluten adversely affects my daughter.
