Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Cookies

When I was going through my collection of cookie recipes the other day, I realized that I had never posted a simple chocolate chip cookie recipe that could be made in the air fryer.

Silly me! Well, today I’m fixing that and sharing my easy peasy air fryer chocolate chip cookies with you all!

The cookie batter is pretty much the same as my Best Ever Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe, only this time I’m teaching you how to make them in the air fryer!

And, it isn’t the only air fryer cookie recipe I’ve got that you can try. Air fryer oatmeal cookies are perfectly soft and chewy, and these lemon cake mix ones are full of bright citrus flavor.

And for something super indulgent, don’t miss this GIANT air fryer caramel pecan version!

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

  • All-Purpose Flour – The standard for most of my baking recipes, all-purpose flour works well for chocolate chip cookies in the air fryer. If you’re gluten-free, you can substitute it with a GF option with a 1:1 ratio.
  • Baking Soda – To help your cookies rise as they air fry. Don’t skip it or you’ll end up with super flat and dense results.
  • Salted Butter – I’m opting for salted butter for this recipe — it helps balance out all of the sugar. Make sure it’s softened before you get started!
  • Brown & White Sugar – My trick for extra soft and chewy cookies is to use a combination of both brown and white sugar. It’s such a simple hack that makes a world of difference.
  • Vanilla Extract – To add a touch of warmth to this chocolate chip cookies air fryer recipe, pure vanilla extract is a must. It adds a very subtle flavor and works wonderfully with the chocolate chips.
  • Egg – All you need is 1!
  • Chocolate Chips – I’m using milk chocolate chips and semi-sweet chocolate chips for double the fun!

Tips and Tricks to Make Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies in Air Fryer

  • Preheat the air fryer.

Baking in an air fryer requires a lot less preheating time than an oven. Though, you should still make a point to preheat it for a few minutes.

Set it to 320°F as you make the cookie batter to ensure a consistent temperature throughout the air frying process — it will help the air fryer chocolate chip cookies bake evenly!

  • Use room temperature ingredients.

If you’ve read any of my baking posts you’re probably thinking, “Okay, Donna, we get it with the room temp ingredients!”

But, it’s so important that I feel the need to repeat myself!!

When you use room-temperature egg and butter you’ll get a much smoother batter, which will result in a better texture once the cookies are done baking. Trust me on this one!

  • Consider chilling the batter before air frying.

While totally optional, I like to chill the cookie dough for about 30 minutes after forming the cookie dough balls.

Chilled dough tends to spread a lot less, which will give you thicker and chewier results.

This technique, paired with my 2-types-of-sugar tip will pretty much guarantee super soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies in the air fryer!

  • Feel free to adjust to your preference.

You can definitely use as little or as many chocolate chips as you’d like. If you prefer a more chocolatey flavor, consider adding an extra ½ cup.

Or, you can even experiment with the type of chocolate you use, add some funfetti sprinkles, or try mini marshmallows!

Prep Ahead

  • Preheat the air fryer to 320°F
  • Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper
  • Soften the butter

Kitchen Tools You Will Need

  • Air Fryer – Different brands and sizes may require different cooking times, so be familiar with your model and make adjustments as needed.
  • Parchment Paper – Prevents your air fryer chocolate chip cookies from sticking and makes cleanup a breeze!
  • Mixing Bowls – I like to have a variety of sizes on hand, and this set has them all.
  • Whisk – These have held up for over 10 years and are still as good as the day I bought them. With 3 sizes, there is a whisk for every job!
  • Electric Hand Mixer – I’ve had this one in my kitchen forever, and it still works beautifully.
  • Cookie Scoops – Great for cookies, meatballs, ice cream, and portioning out leftovers. I’ve had this set for years and use them all the time.
  • Wire Rack – Great for cooling all kinds of baked goods.

Storing and Reheating Chocolate Chip Cookies in an Air Fryer

You can store air fryer chocolate chip cookies in an airtight container on the counter for 5-7 days. You can also keep them in the fridge if you’d like.

To reheat the chocolate chip cookies in air fryer (I love a warm cookie myself!), set the temperature to 300°F.

Add the cookies to the basket and heat for 1-3 minutes or until heated through.

Chocolate Chip Cookies Air Fryer FAQ

Can I make the cookie dough ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can make the cookie dough up to 24 hours before using it and store it in the fridge. And, as a bonus, remember that chilling the cookie dough will give you thicker results!

Do you need parchment paper for cookies in air fryer?

Yes, I recommend adding parchment paper to the basket when making this chocolate chip cookies air fryer recipe. It will help prevent sticking and cleanup will be even easier.

Can you use aluminum foil in an air fryer for cookies?

Foil is fine to use in an air fryer as long as it doesn’t touch the heating element and is weighed down with something so it doesn’t blow around with the hot circulating air. That said, I use parchment paper almost exclusively because it’s safe and all-around easier to work with.
