What are dessert bombs?
Dessert bombs are a pull-apart bread dessert with your favorite pie filling, caramel, and chopped nuts. They are eaten one part at a time and are also referred to as pull-apart bread.
In addition to the sweet version, there are also savory bread bombs. The most popular recipes for them on our site are the bacon mac and cheese bombs and the bacon and egg breakfast bombs.
Caramel Apple Pie Bombs Recipe Notes
Everyone loves apple pie but sometimes I just want something a little bit different. If you’re hoping to try a new fall dessert this year, you are going to love these easy caramel apple pie bombs.
These explode with flavor and are loaded with ooey-gooey deliciousness.
This bread is super simple, great for a party, and can be prepped ahead of time if you’re in a pinch when party planning. It’s a great touch on a holiday table as an alternative to traditional rolls.
- Can the recipe be made with other types of dough?
Yes, you can make this pull-apart bread recipe with different types of bread or biscuit dough. Just roll the individual pieces of dough into small flat balls or bombs to use them.
- Can you make this pull-apart bread recipe with canned pie filling?
If you don’t have fresh apples, you can use apple pie filling instead. Or, you can change up the type of pie filling and use peach or blueberry for different types of dessert bombs.
- Flattening the dough
You can use a rolling pin or you can pull the dough around the edges like you are making a mini pizza. Or, you can flatten them with a tortilla press.
- Caramel on the loose!
If any of the delicious caramel escapes during cooking, scoop it up and spoon it over the top as a sauce.
- Making this recipe ahead
To prep ahead of time, make the apple pie filling and set it aside. Then, assemble the pie bombs and cover them with plastic wrap until you want to bake them.
Storing, freezing, and reheating pie bombs
I love the way this autumn dessert tastes warm right out of the oven. It really is the best way to enjoy it since the biscuits are light and fluffy and the caramel is gooey and melted.
- Storing instructions
These caramel apple pie bombs are really best when you first take them out of the oven. But, if you want to store them, you can keep them in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days in a tightly covered baking dish.
- Can I freeze apple caramel pie bombs?
If you need to, you can freeze this apple dessert, but the quality is much better when you make it the first time.
Place the leftovers in a freezer-proof container and store them for up to 6 months in the freezer.
- Reheating leftovers
Before reheating leftovers, first allow them to thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
After they thaw out, place them on a sheet pan in a 325 F. oven and allow them to warm slowly, until the filling is hot and bubbly.
Enjoy!
With love from our simple kitchen to yours.

Caramel Apple Pie Bombs + Video
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, divided
- 2 medium apples, peeled cored and diced (I used gala)
- 6 tablespoons light brown sugar, packed
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 30 caramels, unwrapped and divided (I use Kraft)
- All-purpose flour, (for dusting)
- 12 frozen white dinner roll dough balls, (I used Rhodes)
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Butter an 8 x 8-inch baking pan with 2 tablespoons of the butter and set aside.
- Combine the apples, 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar and the cinnamon in a medium bowl and toss to coat. Set aside. Unwrap the caramels and cut 18 of them into quarters. Set aside. Lightly flour your counter top.
- Flatten each dough ball into a circle about 3 inches across. You can use a rolling pin or you can pull the dough around the edges like you are making a mini pizza. Add 1 tablespoon of the apple mixture and 6 of the cut caramel pieces.
- Carefully pull each side over the center to create a “package,” and then roll the dough into a ball. Be careful to make sure you cannot see through the dough. If you have any tears or can’t seal the dough, tap your fingertips in flour, pinch any tears and roll again.
- Place the dough ball in the prepared dish, seam side down. Repeat until all of the apple pie bombs are in the dish. Brush the apple pie bombs with the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter and sprinkle with the remaining 4 tablespoons of brown sugar. Bake the bombs for 30 to 35 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and they are no longer doughy.
- Meanwhile, place the remaining 12 caramels and the heavy cream in a microwave safe bowl and microwave until melted, 30 seconds at a time, stirring after each interval. Once you have a smooth mixture, set aside to cool.
- Remove the apple pie bombs from the oven and drizzle with the caramel sauce.
- Serve and enjoy!

How exciting! We love these too Barbara.
Sure easy to make and turned out great! So delicious, my family loved them my husband suggested I try putting chopped nuts on top next time.
Nuts sound like a great idea Barbara. Let us know how it goes.
These look so, so gooey and delicious!
Made these last night and wow!!!

I am totally going to make these!
I don't understand what is meant by " frozen white dinner rolls, (uncooked)"? Is this a can/roll of refrigerated biscuits?
They're in the freezer section at the grocery store with other breads. Not biscuits.

Frozen white dinner rolls, like the ones that Rhode's makes. Enjoy!
They are in the frozen food section by the breads/rolls/garlic bread usually.
Hi, I'm from South Africa and I don't think we get these "caramels" which you mention. Can you explain what they are or is there anything I can use instead of caramels? Thanks
If you do not have any caramel candies, you could use make a simple caramel syrup and chill it until thick. Then scoop about a teaspoon in each popper. Enjoy and let us know how it goes.
We don't have frozen dinner rolls here. Any thoughts on a substitution?
Absolutely. You can mix up dough and portion it out to use. Check out our Jalapeno Popper for a great dough recipe (prepare dough as instructed and then follow caramel apple pie bomb recipe). http://www.theslowroasteditalian.com/2014/01/jalapeno-popper-cheesy-pretzel-bombs-recipe.html
Use a frozen loaf and cut it into roll size pieces of dough once it defrosts
What do you mean by "divided" caramels?
It means the total quantity of the ingredient (in this case, caramels) is divided. The caramels have multiple additions in the recipe. So, you add 1/2 at part 1 and half at part 3 (example only).,
How could you make or adapt these for a diabetic?
I am not familiar with diabetic cooking. You could substitute the filling ingredients with diabetic friendly ingredients. Enjoy and let us know how it goes.
Do not have a9x6 pan what can use instead
How about an 8×8 brownie pan!
To make it easier to remove the cellophane from the caramels, first put them in the freezer and they will peel right off.
OMG these are so good. I have made them several times now. I have discovered that Kraft makes Caramel Bits found near the Chocolate Chips at the grocery store (Meijer stores for sure carry them). 8 = 1 Caramel Square. So much easier and the work great.
I think you could make this recipe where you put brown sugar melted butter and nuts on the bottom of your 9 x9 pan. set the pies on top and then bake fill done. Then invert when they're done cooking and then all that good creamy caramel topping Pours Down Over the Top of the pie rolls. I make pecans cinnamon rolls this way and they are so Breaking GOOD!!!
Could you use a metal 9×13 pan? Baking time difference?
Could I use apple pie filling??
These look sooo tummy 😘 but we don't have frozen dinner rolls in Norway, do you think I can use puff pastry?
These look so, so delicious!
Looks like you don't let the rolls rise before baking. Is that correct? Will definitely be trying these.
These are just that, the bomb!!! Delicious!
These rolls are frozen how do you roll them out?
You let them come to room temp first!
