Ingredients for Apple Pie filling

What are dessert bombs?

Dessert bombs are a pull-apart bread dessert with your favorite pie filling, caramel, and chopped nuts. They are eaten one part at a time and are also referred to as pull-apart bread.

In addition to the sweet version, there are also savory bread bombs. The most popular recipes for them on our site are the bacon mac and cheese bombs and the bacon and egg breakfast bombs.

Rolling out the dough

Caramel Apple Pie Bombs Recipe Notes

Everyone loves apple pie but sometimes I just want something a little bit different. If you’re hoping to try a new fall dessert this year, you are going to love these easy caramel apple pie bombs.

These explode with flavor and are loaded with ooey-gooey deliciousness.

This bread is super simple, great for a party, and can be prepped ahead of time if you’re in a pinch when party planning. It’s a great touch on a holiday table as an alternative to traditional rolls.

Stuffing the dough
  • Can the recipe be made with other types of dough?

Yes, you can make this pull-apart bread recipe with different types of bread or biscuit dough. Just roll the individual pieces of dough into small flat balls or bombs to use them.

  • Can you make this pull-apart bread recipe with canned pie filling?

If you don’t have fresh apples, you can use apple pie filling instead. Or, you can change up the type of pie filling and use peach or blueberry for different types of dessert bombs.

Crimping the edges for the caramel apple pie bombs
  • Flattening the dough

You can use a rolling pin or you can pull the dough around the edges like you are making a mini pizza. Or, you can flatten them with a tortilla press.

  • Caramel on the loose!

If any of the delicious caramel escapes during cooking, scoop it up and spoon it over the top as a sauce.

Storing, freezing, and reheating pie bombs

I love the way this autumn dessert tastes warm right out of the oven. It really is the best way to enjoy it since the biscuits are light and fluffy and the caramel is gooey and melted.

  • Storing instructions

These caramel apple pie bombs are really best when you first take them out of the oven. But, if you want to store them, you can keep them in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days in a tightly covered baking dish.

  • Can I freeze apple caramel pie bombs?

If you need to, you can freeze this apple dessert, but the quality is much better when you make it the first time.
Place the leftovers in a freezer-proof container and store them for up to 6 months in the freezer.

  • Reheating leftovers

Before reheating leftovers, first allow them to thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

After they thaw out, place them on a sheet pan in a 325 F. oven and allow them to warm slowly, until the filling is hot and bubbly.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes
Course Dessert
Cuisine American
Method Oven
Servings 12

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, divided
  • 2 medium apples, peeled cored and diced (I used gala)
  • 6 tablespoons light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 30 caramels, unwrapped and divided (I use Kraft)
  • All-purpose flour, (for dusting)
  • 12 frozen white dinner roll dough balls, (I used Rhodes)
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Butter an 8 x 8-inch baking pan with 2 tablespoons of the butter and set aside.
  • Combine the apples, 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar and the cinnamon in a medium bowl and toss to coat. Set aside. Unwrap the caramels and cut 18 of them into quarters. Set aside. Lightly flour your counter top.
  • Flatten each dough ball into a circle about 3 inches across. You can use a rolling pin or you can pull the dough around the edges like you are making a mini pizza. Add 1 tablespoon of the apple mixture and 6 of the cut caramel pieces.
  • Carefully pull each side over the center to create a “package,” and then roll the dough into a ball. Be careful to make sure you cannot see through the dough. If you have any tears or can’t seal the dough, tap your fingertips in flour, pinch any tears and roll again.
  • Place the dough ball in the prepared dish, seam side down. Repeat until all of the apple pie bombs are in the dish. Brush the apple pie bombs with the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter and sprinkle with the remaining 4 tablespoons of brown sugar. Bake the bombs for 30 to 35 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and they are no longer doughy.
  • Meanwhile, place the remaining 12 caramels and the heavy cream in a microwave safe bowl and microwave until melted, 30 seconds at a time, stirring after each interval. Once you have a smooth mixture, set aside to cool.
  • Remove the apple pie bombs from the oven and drizzle with the caramel sauce.
  • Serve and enjoy!

  1. Made these today for my husband to take to a church committee meeting and was looking forward to trying the leftovers. They each are two pieces because our was so amazing! Guess I'll be making it again soon so I can finally eat it!

  2. Im hoping you reply to this, as i noticed the last few questions never got answered. does the dinner rolls need to be prepared (allowed to thaw and rise) or just thaw them until soft and then roll them out?? thanks in advance!!

  3. Made these tonight for thanksgiving 2020! I used the canned pillsbury biscuit dough because I couldn’t find the frozen rolls and it worked out perfectly! I was so worried lol. But these were absolute ooey gooey goodness. My only complaint was I wanted more apples to fit inside the pouches.

  4. You can also use Pillsbury crescent rolls, as well as the biscuits. Both taste awesome!

Not sure if the puff pastry would be "sturdy" enough for the filling.

I have made this several times since finding this recipe! My kids love it! I add a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, and it is perfect! Also, I use Kraft caramel bits, because it’s hard to cut their caramels into thirds (arthritic hands), and is still yummy!

I can’t find frozen dough so I just make dough in my bread maker. I just roll them out, and fill them like in recipe, but I let them rise 45 min before cooking. Delish!!
