Strawberry Milkshake Recipe

While I’m a self-professed chocoholic, I do have a soft spot for fruity desserts — especially ones made with strawberries!

Shortcake, pie, cheesecake bars, fluff, Twinkie cake… there are so many delicious recipes to choose from!

But I wanted a new way to enjoy these gorgeous berries that was also quick and easy to make.

So, I created this milkshake with strawberry and creamer, layered with fluffy whipped cream for the dreamiest dessert.

Naturally, we had to test this strawberry milkshake recipe again and again… and again to make sure the balance of strawberries and cream was on point.  Of course.  {{grin}}

Every one of us devoured these over and over. You are going to love them! Each sip is perfectly sweet, loaded with strawberry flavor, and swirled with cream.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

  • Sweet Cream Creamer – This is a very specific ingredient to look for! The brand is International Delight, and it tastes like Cold Stone Sweet Cream ice cream.

Feel free to use another creamer to make this strawberry milkshake recipe if you prefer (or if this one isn’t available).

Try to stick with a “sweet cream” flavor, but vanilla will work in a pinch.
  • Frozen Strawberries – Look for regular, unsweetened whole or sliced strawberries — the kind you’d use for a smoothie and not the sweetened ones for dessert toppings.
  • Whipped Cream – It’s so easy to whip up a fresh batch, and you’ll always get the fluffiest texture that way!

To save some time, you can certainly layer this strawberries and cream drink using a spray can or a tub of Cool Whip instead.

Tips and Tricks to Make a Perfect Milkshake with Strawberry

  • Scrape down the sides as you blend.

Some blenders come with a plunger that greatly helps with this! If yours does not, simply stop the blender and scrape down the sides with a silicone spatula before continuing.

You want every little bit of strawberry to blend seamlessly into the shake for the smoothest results. And you can use the same spatula to drop the whipped cream into the glasses.

  • Adjust the consistency.

If your shake is too thick, add a little more creamer and blend it again. But if it seems too thin, all you need to do is add more frozen berries!

  • Make the colors even more vibrant.

I love the naturally pink hue from the berries, but you can amp things up with a little gel food coloring.

Start with just a drop or two and blend again, repeating until it looks just right. Deepen the pink color or make it a vibrant red, especially for holidays!

  • Don’t forget to layer!

The best strawberry milkshake, in my opinion, is layered with fluffy whipped cream!

Pour a small amount of the shake into the bottom of a glass, then top it with some whipped cream.

Continue alternating the two ingredients, giving the glass a gentle swirl as you near the top. This helps the layers blend together just a bit so you get the best sip.

Finish with a healthy dollop of whipped cream on top, along with any other toppings you might like!

Kitchen Tools You Will Need

  • Blender – A high-powered blender is a must in every kitchen!
  • Stand Mixer or large mixing bowl with Hand Mixer for making the whipped cream. You’ll need the whisk attachment too.

Best Strawberry Milkshake Toppings

I love to top this strawberries and cream drink with a fresh strawberry! It ties the whole thing together so nicely and adds an extra pop of color.

Munchkin loves rainbow sprinkles on her shakes (I mean, what kid doesn’t?!), but heart-shaped sprinkles would be extra cute for a Valentine’s Day treat.

And if you really want to be fancy, add a cookie straw and a drizzle of strawberry sauce!

Homemade Strawberry Milkshake FAQ

Can I use fresh strawberries instead?

It’s important to use frozen berries for this strawberry milkshake recipe to achieve that thick and frosty texture.

However, you can still make use of an abundance of summer berries! Wash and hull fresh strawberries, then lay them out to dry on a paper towel or clean kitchen cloth.

Transfer them to a sheet pan and freeze until firm (about 1-2 hours), then store in a freezer-safe zip-top bag for up to a year.

Once frozen, you can use them to make a homemade strawberry milkshake or some sweet treats for your pup!

What can I use instead of coffee creamer?

Make an easy substitute by whisking ⅓ cup of powdered sugar and 4 teaspoons of vanilla extract into 1 ¼ cup of half & half.

I don’t recommend using milk because it won’t be nearly as sweet and the texture will be too thin. Creamer makes the best strawberry milkshake without ice cream.

Can I make this recipe with different berries?

You bet! Instead of making a milkshake with strawberries, try cherries, blueberries, or mixed berries. You could even use a mixture of your favorites to create new flavors.

The fruit will still need to be frozen, and you may need to adjust the amount to get the right consistency. Nothing like a delicious trial-and-error project!
